Microsoft's Newest Search Engine "Bing"

The new Microsoft “Bing” search engine has been two years in the making and is Microsoft’s latest effort to challenge Google which is currently producing approx 93% of search traffic in Australia. Microsoft’s “Bing” search engine aims to shorten the time it takes users to find the information they need by making as much information available on the first page results which is of the highest relevance.

According to survey’s conducted by Microsoft in the US, as many as half of all searches conduced online either did not provide the desired information or provided irrelevant results. Using this information Microsoft wants to be able to provide the right results at the right time.

Some of the new features include:

•    Instant summaries of web page content
•    Mouse-Over previews of search results
•    Thumbnail videos that play within search results and
•    Secondary search categories to help people refine their searches

Microsoft’s “Bing” has more in store for the future with expansions over time to include “Most popular searches” which shows what users are searching for in near-real time and other data such as shopping information and product reviews.
Microsoft’s Bing uses Yahoo search marketing so setting up a campaign is easy, and if your current account is running on Yahoo it will appear on Bing’s search results.

Search is the second most popular web activity after email and possibly the best way to market your product online. The increased competition in the search engine industry will benefit both advertisers and users by increasing product scope, technology and usability. The most important thing in the search industry is to increase relevancy to users and I think Microsoft’s new “Bing” search engine has achieved just that.

From a search agency perspective increased relevancy allows us to target our campaigns more effectively and produce increased results for our clients, this move is encouraged from all search engines and we look forward to the scheduled expansions in the future from Google, Bing & Yahoo.
