ALT tags are crying “ABUSE”

There have been many a times where alt tags have been miss used by those that claim to be SEO specialists. The true professionals out there know that an alt tag should only be used for what it was originally created to do.

Some examples of what not to do:
  • Placing a keyword within an image that is used for bullet points, horizontal lines etc.
  • Inserting marked up code into the alt tag, e.g. alt =”<h1>Keyword</h1>”
  • Using a keyword for an image that has no relevance

The W3C defines an alt tag as “text that fulfils the same function as the image.” (http://www.w3.org/QA/Tips/altAttribute).

 

The difference between a professional search engine optimisation specialist and a keyword stuffer is knowing when to use keywords appropriately within an alt tag.
