Proof Search Engines use Keywords within URL’s

Recently a couple of engineers at Yahoo! took out a patent “Techniques for Tokenizing URL’s

The field of invention (reasoning for the patent) is stated as “The present invention relates to URLs, and specifically, to tokenizing URLs to extract keywords.

Long gone are the days of unreadable, numerical based URLs, these days you can get or create a function that will rewrite the URL so that it is easy to read for people and will be able to contain keywords to boost your site on the search engines.

The patent states that the URL is broken into 5 parts:

  • Scheme: identifies the protocol to be used to access a resource on the Internet. e.g. HTTP or FTP
  • Authority: identifies the host server that stores the web documents or resources e.g. firstclickconsulting.com
  • Path: identifies the specific resource or web document within a host that a client wishes to access e.g. [insert the folder path of this new URL created for this page]
  • Query arguments: comprise a string of name and value pairs e.g. user=ash
  • Fragments: are used to direct a web browser to a reference or function within a web document e.g. #seo

So now it is official, even though it is something we have all known for a while now, keywords do play a major role within URL’s.
